Daily Musings on the Hill

Darling Hill is a quiet place with a narrow, welcoming lane. The view from the top is breathtaking and its vistas change many times throughout a day. I hope that you can visit often and enjoy it as much as my dear Husband, family and I do. God has allowed Syd and I to sojourn here until He leads us on to another place of service or until He takes us Home to Heaven. The little cabin He has provided sits alongside Darling Hill Road, nestled in, on a northwest corner.

Hebrews 13:15, 16

"By Him, therefore, let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to His name. But to do good and to communicate forget not; for with such sacrifices God is well pleased."

Watermelon Pops!

Watermelon Pops!
As we shared watermelon with family the other night, I thought..."these would make great summer pops!" So today we tried it. Simply "finger" them and freeze on a plate. They are just like eating a fruit pop. They'll be a welcome snack in the heat of Summer!

To Cane a Chair

To Cane a Chair
You probably have a few chairs in the attic. Grab one and follow 7 easy steps to a new seat!

Step 1

Step 1
string it up from center back hole to center front; doing first one side then the other

Steps 2 and 3

Steps 2 and 3
string it across, then from front to back again, laying third layer over the ones from side to side.

step 4

step 4
This is where the weaving begins. When you start this step you must begin going over the third set of strands and under the first set, as shown

step 5

step 5
This is your first diagonal step. Starting from one corner, begin weaving over the strands running side to side and under those running front to back

step 6

Your second diagonal weave. Simply weave the opposite way; under strands side to side and over those running front to back. No photo shown, but easy to see in next one.

step 7; Binding-off

step 7; Binding-off
Take your wider binding cane and cut four pieces, lengths to fit down each side, across back and across front. Begin going up one hole, over binding cane and down the same hole, then up through the next, as shown

Finished seat!

Finished seat!
Be sure that all loose ends are tucked under cane beneath (this should be done with each strand at the time that you are using the piece, so that the cane does not dry out too much, thus cracking)

Making Sturm's Dog Coat

Making Sturm's Dog Coat
Why is it that every little coat for small dogs has "armholes" in it? Ruger's coat is SO easy, just like a horse blanket; velcro in the front, velcro around the belly! I started with a baby's fleece sleeper and cut the legs off to use around tummy

First fitting...

First fitting...
...Hmm, doesn't look pleased...

Final Fitting:

Final Fitting:
..."I guess it's o.k."

Just so you know, the dogs only wear these out when it's extremely cold and we're going on a walk.

Just so you know, the dogs only wear these out when it's extremely cold and we're going on a walk.
..."okay, COOL!"

Thanks for visiting! Hope you'll stop by the hill often.

It's important to remember: Every day is an adventure. Only the Lord knows what is going to happen to us today. May I, without murmuring, allow Him to bring those things into my life day by day that are meant for my good, and for His glory!

Ephesians 2:8-10

"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God; not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them."

Psalm 66:16

"Come and hear, all ye that fear God, and I will declare what He hath done for my soul."

Don't Forget the Blossom Syrups

Don't Forget the Blossom Syrups
Many edible flowers can be made into syrup. This violet syrup is especially good for chest congestion. It is soothing for a scratchy throat too. Some people like to enjoy it on ice cream or even pancakes. I'll post the recipe below

Burdock Root

Burdock Root
...yes, I dug some today. We have PLENTY. Contact me if you'd like some.

Aunt Jan's Wild Corner

This is just the kind of recipe that my Aunt Jan would have loved to share with you. I have no doubt that she made syrups from many edible flowers.

Violet Syrup

3 handful of violet heads (remove stems)
Boil 1 1/4 cup of water. Pour over the violet heads and let sit overnight or for up to 18 hours.
Drain the light blue water into a glass pyrex pot.

1 cup white sugar. Add to the violet water.

Bring the sugar water to a boil, stirring with a wooden spoon.

Slowly add a very little lemon juice (I do use reconstituted) but do it very slowly. The more you add, the PINKER it gets. Just a small amount will bring the violet purple hue. Too much will get "bubble gum" pink. (I did add a little too much this time).

Allow it to come to a light, rolling boil and allow to boil (stirring) for at least two minutes, three minutes is better.
Immediately pour into clean glass jars. Enjoy!

The Reason For This Blog

The number one reason is stated above...to declare what God has done for my soul! Sometimes we can sit and chat with other ladies about our wonderful Lord Jesus, but time limits and distractions do not often allow those intimate times. Why life must be so harried, it's hard to say. Many have children, jobs keep us running in opposite directions, life in general is fast-paced these days. Even at church we are scurrying after children, getting lunch, practicing for special music, cleaning up, etc. Sadly, even when we do talk to one another it is often about worldly pursuits, funny stories, our week-happenings (nothing wrong with these subjects); not as often about the things that the Lord has been teaching us. This blog started out to bless the Lord for His greatness and to simply share my heart concerning these things; first to my Christian sisters (and brothers, if they read, and their families) who I go to church with and those who live in other towns, states and other countries. Secondly, to keep in touch with a friend who was moving out of state. It is also something that I wanted to leave with my nieces and grand-nieces, to my husband and to my friends. When you read a blog that shares truth from God's Word and the way God is using it on a day by day basis, it does serve to be in touch with the writer's very heart. I'm happy to think that if I go to be with the Lord, perhaps today, that I had unashamedly declared God's working within and that there will be parts of my heart left here that people can read and relate to, things that reflect upon my wonderful Lord Jesus. On a daily basis I want the things written here to point others to God, to Jesus Christ, our Creator. Because of our great Savior, we can say with the Psalmist, "My foot standeth in an even place; in the congregations will I bless the Lord." Psalm 26:12 and "My tongue shall speak of thy righteousness and of thy praise all the day long." Psalm 35:28

'Free Course' -a newsletter from our local church, has been sent out to approximately 4000 people, covering several communities. We pray for hearts, open to receive the salvation message of God's Word.

Local church pastors, as they uphold the Word of God, spread the gospel to the unsaved and disciple the believers.

Local church members, as we grow together in unity, showing the love of God to one another and that it spill out in our testimony to the unsaved. That all Christians will be obedient to the Scriptures and not cause anyone to stumble.

Loved Speakers:

We hope that in the near future we can put the link to our local church website so that you can hear messages from our own Pastor Rhodes. We also have two preachers from the sermon audio link who we really love to hear sermons from. Their names are Mike Allison and Chuck Crabtree. Simply go to "sermons by speaker" and type their name in the field.
